KISS-DU Observes National Nutrition Month on “Nutritious Diet for Everyone”

The School of Comparative Indic Studies and Tribal Science (SCIST) and the Internal Quality Assurance Cell (IQAC), KISS-DU jointly organized an enlightening invited lecture to mark the National Nutrition Month themed “Nutritious Diet for Everyone” on 26th September 2024. This event was organized in collaboration with the Centre for Product Development of Underutilized Wild Edible Plants, KISS-DU.

The event was focused on the importance of nutrition and the role of underutilized wild edible plants in enhancing dietary diversity among adolescents. The session commenced with Vice Chancellor Professor Deepak Kumar Behera’s deliberation on emphasizing the significance of National Nutrition Month. He highlighted how this observance serves as a crucial reminder for individuals and communities to prioritize nutrition, encouraging informed food choices that promote health and well-being.

The invited speaker for the day, Professor P. Yasodhara, Rtd. Consultant Home Science, Directorate Vocational Education, Higher Education Department, Govt. of Odisha graced the occasion. She spoke on “Revitalizing Adolescent Nutrition with Underutilized Wild Edible Plants.” Her presentation was both insightful and engaging, focusing on the nutritional benefits of incorporating wild edible plants into the diets of adolescents. She highlighted how these underutilized plants, often overlooked in mainstream diets, are rich in essential nutrients and can play a significant role in addressing nutritional deficiencies among young people. Dr. Yasodhara elaborated on the various wild edible plants found in Odisha, highlighting their potential health benefits, including improved immunity, enhanced growth, and overall well-being. She emphasized the need to educate adolescents and their families about the availability and nutritional value of these plants, advocating for their inclusion in daily meals as a way to promote healthier eating habits to lead a disease free life.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Sadhni Induar, who expressed gratitude to the speakers, senior functionaries, faculty members and research scholars for their wholehearted participation and contribution in making the event a success. Their presence underscored the collaborative spirit and commitment to advancing nutritional knowledge within the institution and promoting healthier lifestyles within the community.
