A three-day virtual International e-Workshop with the theme, ‘Imbibe research culture to empower Nursing Professionals for imparting quality Health Care’, organized by Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS), KIIT Deemed to be University in collaboration with ICMR, was inaugurated at KINS on 17th December 2020. The e-workshop aims to sensitize the nursing community on the importance of research, which will shape the health policy, contribute to global healthcare and uncover knowledge to build the foundation of clinical practice.
The inaugural session was graced by Dr. S. Nanda, Professor of Eminence & Research Chair, KIIT-DU; Prof. J. R. Mohanty, Registrar; Maj. Gen. (Dr.) P. K. Patnaik, Principal, KIMS & Director General, School of Medicine; Dr. (Mrs) Sanjukta Sahoo, Director of Nursing, Odisha; Dr. (Mrs) Sanghamitra Pati, Director & Scientist, RMRC, ICMR, Bhubaneswar; and Prof. (Mrs) Amarita Lenka, Principal, KINS.
Appreciating KINS for organizing the e-workshop, Prof. S. Nanda said, nursing is both art and science, and also a flexible paradigm where every day new things can be learned, discovered and taught. Prof. J. R. Mohanty emphasized that publication and research have become necessary to sustain in the world of academia. Maj. Gen. (Dr.) P. K. Patnaik spoke on the milestones reached by nurses in the field of health science and conveyed take-home-message to all participants to develop research attitudes. Dr. (Mrs) Sanjukta Sahoo emphasized on the importance of research for students as well as faculties across the globe.
Prof. (Mrs.) Amarita Lenka, who conceptualized the theme of the e-workshop and selected topics for technical sessions and eminent speakers, emphasized on the importance of imbibing research culture among the faculties and students in order to keep pace with the scientific and technological development and initiate evidence-based patient care in the clinical practice. Congratulating the Principal and faculty members of KINS for their dedication, hard work and positive attitude, Dr. (Mrs) Sanghamitra Pati explained how the pandemic situation has paved the way to focus on everyday research work.
There were approximately 446 virtual participants from across the globe. E-souvenir of the workshop was also released by the Principal, KINS and other dignitaries. The word of thanks was proposed by Prof. (Mrs) Niyati Das, Vice-Principal, KINS.
The first talk following the inaugural session was delivered by Dr. Mercy Thangarathna Henry, PhD Scholar, Melbourne La trobe University. Explaining major findings of systematic review, research capacity building and RCC tool, she suggested dissemination of research findings through posters in hospitals. Organization plays an important role in inculcating research skills and knowledge among students in clinical practice, she added. Prof. (Mrs) Ritanjali Sahoo, Principal, Cuttack College of Nursing moderated the session.
Dr. K. C. Sahoo, Public Health and HTA Service, RMRC spoke on the topic ‘Mixed method research design’. He elaborated thoroughly on the different components of the design, 4-key decisions involved in choosing appropriate mixed method design, prototypical characteristics and advanced mixed method designs. This interactive session was moderated by Mrs. Dharitri Swain, Asst. Prof, AIIMS College of Nursing.
At the last session, Dr. Manjubala Das, Professor and HOD, Dept. of O&G Nursing, MTPG & RIHS explained ‘Designing quantitative research studies’. She illustrated best practices for quantitative design, characteristics, ontology and types of quantitative design. She gave in-depth knowledge on each principle of research design. This session was moderated by Prof. (Mrs.) Anasuya Pattnaik, Principal, DRIEMS School & College of Nursing.
The first day of the e-workshop concluded with scientific paper presentations by 21 participants. The session was chaired by Dr. Pravati Tripathy, Dean, SUM Nursing College, SOA University; Dr. G. Balamurugan, Registrar (Administration), HOD, Dept. of Mental Health Nursing, Ramaiah Institute of Nursing and Research, Bengaluru and Prof. (Mrs.) Tapati Saha, Additional Dean, HOD, Community Health Nursing, SUM Nursing College.
