Day-2 of e-Seminar on Breastfeeding Week-2021

Dr. Aditya Mohapatra, Addl. Director, NHM Odisha; Mrs. Hepsi Bai Joseph, Associate Professor, AIIMS Bhubaneswar; and Dr. Santosh Panda, Neonatologist, KIMS took sessions on the second day of the e-seminar organized by Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS) on the occasion of “World Breastfeeding Week-2021”, on 4th August 2021. Taking a session on “Challenges, Solutions and Actions at different health levels”, Dr. Mohapatra stated that the early initiation of breastfeeding reduces the neonatal mortality by 22% and also elaborated in detail about the best practices to be followed in the labour room like skin to skin contact, early initiation of breastfeeding, family centered care, use of expressed breast milk, etc. in order to facilitate breastfeeding.

Mrs. Joseph presented a talk on “Breast Feeding in Normal and Crisis Situation”. She emphasized that mothers should breast feed and also practice exclusive breastfeeding in normal as well as in crisis situations. She spotlighted on consequences and perceived challenges of mothers regarding breastfeeding during crisis situations, and suggested remedies. The last session of the day on “Neonatal Care during Pandemic” was taken by Dr. Panda. He spoke on pregnancy management of Covid-19 mothers, delivery room preparation and management, breastfeeding in Covid-19 and discharge criteria with an in-depth explanation.

Earlier, Professor Mrs. Amarita Lenka, Principal, College of Nursing, KINS introduced the speakers. The session was attended by 150 participants including students and faculty members of KINS. On the occasion, B.Sc.(N) 3rd year students also performed a role play on the topic Bikash Mantra virtually. The programme ended with the vote of thanks proposed by Mrs. Sweta Rani Dalei, Tutor, KINS.
