Enactus KIIT-KISS, established in 2011 under the mentorship of Dr. Kaish Q Khan, is a dynamic student-led organization that focuses on implementing innovative ideas to uplift and enhance the lives of marginalized communities. With a mission to create sustainable social impact, Enactus KIIT-KISS has been instrumental in generating transformative projects that address the needs and challenges faced by individuals who lack opportunities. Through their dedication and entrepreneurial spirit, the students of Enactus KIIT-KISS strive to make a positive difference and improve the quality of life for those in need by aligning each of the projects with the 17 Sustainable Development Goals as declared by the UN.
Enactus India, a student-body led platform that believes in the power of competition to drive innovation and sustainability, recently hosted its highly anticipated National Exposition in India. At this prestigious event, student teams from across the country showcased the remarkable impact of their social projects, while being evaluated by esteemed business leaders. Enactus KIIT-KISS emerged as a shining star, securing three prestigious awards and a place among the top 19 colleges at the Enactus India National Exposition, making strides in the National Cup after a span of over half a decade.
One of the standout projects, Project Vetra, clinched the victory in the Race for a better India: SDG-1 (No Poverty) category. Project Vetra aims to tackle the issue of single-use plastic by promoting sustainable alternatives. By replacing plastic straws, cutlery, and bags with biodegradable options, the project not only fosters environmental consciousness but also empowers the community. Vetra curates sustainable hotel kits, providing employment opportunities to locals and ensuring a steady income flow.
Another notable achievement came with Project Upahaar, which won the People’s Choice award in the early stage project category for highest number of votes. Focused on menstrual hygiene, Upahaar aims to break the taboos surrounding menstruation and create awareness. The project has made a profound impact on women residing in the slums of Bhubaneswar, while also educating men about menstrual hygiene through its various awareness campaigns.
Projects Siddhi and Encube were the recipients of the People’s Choice award in the mature stage project category for the highest number of view count. Project Siddhi addresses the issue of plastic pollution by replacing plastic bags with eco-friendly paper bags. Additionally, it uplifts women and the transgender community of Bhubaneshwar, Odisha, by providing them with employment opportunities, contributing to 13 out of 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Project Encube focuses on reducing the use of toxic detergents by introducing biodegradable alternatives. This innovative solution not only aligns with SDGs related to clean sanitation and water but also prioritizes the well-being of our oceans and other water bodies. It is worth mentioning the instrumental role played by Dr. BiswaBandita Kar, Professor, School of Applied Sciences in the success of Project Encube.
