Innovative Research by Anesthesia Department, KIMS Appreciated

An original research work by Dr. Sailaja Sukanya, PG student, Department of Anesthesia, KIMS under the guidance of Prof. (Dr.) Amit Padhan and Dr. Ashok Kumar Badamali were profusely appreciated at ISSPCON-2022, the National Pain Conference. Her research was titled “Development and validation of an Objective Pain Scoring system (OPS) and its correlation with Visual Analogue Score (VAS) for evaluation of post operative pain in patients undergoing cardiac surgeries”.

Visual Analogue Score, based on the patient’s complaints about the pain, is the most commonly accepted subjective pain score. The limitation with VAS score is that being subjective it cannot be evaluated in patients during surgery and during periods of mechanical ventilation. The researchers have formulated an objective pain score and validated that with VAS. In the near future, the algorithm created by this research will be used in making a device for automatic delivery of painkillers / analgesic depending upon the extrapolated objective pain score during intraoperative period and during ICU care on mechanical ventilation.

The juries, Dr. Pratibha Matche, Dr. Vivek Chakole and Dr. Samarjeet Dey, appreciated the out of the box idea of chronological research plan conducted by the Department of Anesthesia, KIMS in relation to pain and medical device innovation.
