The Indian National conference on Osteoarthritis SOARCON 2024 was held at the GIFT City, Gujarat. KIMS had an active participation led by Head of Department of Rheumatology, Professor Ramnath Misra. Both Professor Misra and Associate Professor Dr. Sakir Ahmed chaired sessions at the conference.

Dr. Prakashini MV, a DM student and Senior resident from the department of Rheumatology had a platform presentation on “Iguratimod Inhibits Macrophage Migratory Inhibitory Factor in Osteoarthritis Fibroblast-like Synoviocytes in vitro.” She was awarded the third prize in the free papers competition for this work. This seminal work was possible due to close collaboration between Prof. Misra and Dr. Ahmed of the department of Rheumatology with Dr. S. K. Parashar from the Department of Applied Sciences, KIIT University. Dr. Jhinuk Basu, PhD, was instrumental in setting up the patient-derived fibroblast cultures.

Dr. Prakashini presented another paper titled “People with Osteoarthritis have a higher component of Neurogenic pain as compared with those with Rheumatoid Arthritis”. Another final year DM student, Dr. Pranavi V presented her thesis work “Predictors of Response to Intra-articular  Glucocorticoids in Primary Osteoarthritis of the Knee”.

Prof. Misra and Dr. Ahmed expressed their thanks to the Founder Dr. Achyutya Samanta for the unique environment of KIIT University where such cross-field collaborations between Rheumatology and Applied Physics can lead to translation research.
