Vishal Kumar Sahoo, a B.Tech. student of KIIT Deemed to be University bagged the Best Paper Award of Technical Session – 10 at the 3rd International Conference on Innovations in Computational Intelligence and Computer Vision (ICICV-2022) organized by the Department of Computer and Communication Engineering, Manipal University Jaipur from November 24-25, 2022. He got the award for his paper titled “Empirical Study of Multi-class Weed Classification using Deep Learning Network through Transfer Learning” under the track “Computer Vision”.

Vishal was guided by Prof. Mahendra Kumar Gourisaria, Prof. Biswajit Sahoo, Prof. Partha Pratim Sarangi from School of Computer Engineering, KIIT-DU; Prof. Vijander Singh from Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Manipal University Jaipur; and Department of ICT and Natural Sciences, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Alesund, Norway. The research paper endeavors to utilize deep learning techniques, particularly CNN, to automate the classification of weeds in agriculture, with the aim of reducing labor costs, improving crop yield and quality, and decreasing the use of harmful herbicides. The findings of this study imply that deep learning techniques have the potential to augment the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of weed control in agriculture through enabling the selective application of herbicides and the implementation of automation technologies such as robots and UAVs.
