The Department of Orthopaedics at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) celebrated the 15th Bone and Joint Week from August 3 to 8, 2026, under the theme “Strong Bone, Strong Joints Lead to a Better Life – Stronger India.” The week-long programme was organized in line with the call of the Indian Orthopaedic Association (IOA) and Odisha Orthopaedic Association (OOA).

Bone and Joint Day, observed annually on August 4 as decided by the IOA, marks the separation of Orthopaedics from General Surgery in 1971. On this occasion, orthopaedic specialists across the country conduct free health check-ups and awareness programmes focusing on musculoskeletal health.

At KIMS, a series of activities were conducted throughout the week, covering key areas such as screening of children for developmental deformities, osteoporosis detection, fall prevention among the elderly, promotion of correct posture to prevent back pain, and injury prevention at workplaces and on roads. The initiative also emphasised the importance of maintaining good health among surgeons for better patient care.

On August 5 and 6, a team comprising Prof. Dr. Basant Kumar Behera, President of OOA, along with Dr. Dibya Sahu and Dr. Bibhudatta Sahu, visited Kalinga Institute of Social Sciences (KISS), where they conducted health screenings of a record 1,235 students.

A special session for orthopaedic doctors was held on August 6 at the KIMS seminar hall, focusing on stress management and maintaining overall well-being. The session featured talks by Prof. Dr. Debasis Mishra, Head of the Department of Orthopaedics, Prof. Dr. Satya Patra, Secretary of OOA, and psychiatrist Dr. Patjoshi.

On the same day, an awareness programme for around 70 senior citizens and patient attendants was organised, where Dr. Amlan Das highlighted measures to prevent falls at home and maintain proper posture to avoid back-related problems.

A free Bone Mineral Density (BMD) camp was also conducted in the Orthopaedics OPD on August 7, benefiting around 80 individuals through early detection of osteoporosis.

The entire programme was carried out under the banner of IOA and OOA and guided by Prof. Dr. Basant Kumar Behera, Prof. Dr. Satya Patra, and Prof. Dr. Debasis Mishra. The initiative witnessed active participation and concluded successfully, reinforcing the importance of bone and joint health in building a healthier society.
