Department of Child Health Nursing, KINS Organizes In-Service Education Programme on “Handover Technique”
An In-Service Education Programme on “Handover Technique”was organized by the M.Sc. Nursing 1st Year students of the Department of Child Health Nursingon 18th July 2026. The aim of the programme was to enhance the knowledge and skills of nursing personnel regarding effective, accurate, and structured handover techniques to promote clear communication, continuity of care, reduction of communication errors, and patient safety.
The programme commenced with Prof. (Dr.) Niyati Das, Principal, KINS & HOD, Dept of Child Health Nursing addressing the gathering and unveiled the topic of the programme, highlighting the importance of effective handover in ensuring quality patient care, after which the educational session commenced. A pre-test was conducted to assess the participants’ existing knowledge regarding handover techniques.
The first part of the educational session was presented by Ms. Beauty Patra, who covered the meaning and importance of handover, principles of effective handover, and essential components of handover. The second part, focusing on structured handover techniques, was presented by Ms. Ashansita Mukherjee, who explained theSOAP, SBAR, and ISBAR techniques in detail along with their respective steps and checklists.
The SOAP technique included Subjective information, Objective clinical and measurable findings, Assessment of the patient’s current condition, and Plan for ongoing care and further management. The SBAR technique included Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation, while the ISBAR technique emphasized Identification, Situation, Background, Assessment, and Recommendation to ensure complete and standardized communication during patient handover.
The last part of the educational session was presented by Ms. Sneha Mudi, who discussed the steps in pediatric handover, common barriers to effective handover, the role and responsibilities of nurses, the advantages of effective handover, and the consequences of poor handover on patient safety and continuity of care.
To enhance practical understanding, a role play based on the SOAP method was performed by Ms. Sourami Banerjee, Ms. Priti Rakshit & Ms. Shilpa Suman Nayak to demonstrate its application in a real clinical scenario. A post-test was conducted at the end of the session to assess the knowledge gained by the participants.
The programme was attended by around 50 Nursing Officers, Ward In-charges, and Supervisors from the Pediatric Medicine, Pediatric Surgery, and Hematology wards. The programme concluded with a thankful note delivered by Mrs. Sasmita Rout, Associate Professor, KINS, who expressed her appreciation to the Principal, faculty members, participants, and students for their support and active participation.
The entire programme was organized under the valuable guidance and motivation of respected faculties of the Child health nursing department of KINS and special thanks to Dr. Seba Ranjan Biswal-HOD, Department of Pediatrics, PBMH, KIMS for his valuable support.
Overall, the programme was informative, interactive, and beneficial in strengthening the participants’ knowledge and practical understanding of structured handover techniques and their application in ensuring safe, effective, and continuous patient care.
The programme concluded successfully, reinforcing the significance of standardized handover practices and encouraging nursing personnel to incorporate structured communication techniques into their daily clinical practice for better patient outcomes.
