KIMS Establishes Department of Endocrine Surgery

Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS), Bhubaneswar, has further strengthened its superspeciality healthcare services with a new Department of Endocrine Surgery, the first dedicated academic departments of its kind in Eastern India.

Prof. S. K. Mishra, an endocrine surgeon of national repute with decades of experience in clinical service, teaching and research, who had established the first department of Endocrine Surgery in India in SGPGIMS Lucknow has joined the department as Professor Emeritus. Dr.Sushobhan Pradhan who obtained M.Ch Endocrine Surgery from SGPGIMS (First to have this degree from Odisha) has joined as Associate Professor.

The department offers specialised surgical care for disorders of the thyroid gland, including goitre, thyroid nodules and thyroid cancer; parathyroid disorders causing high blood calcium, kidney stones and bone disease; and adrenal gland tumours, including those causing high blood pressure and hormonal disturbances. The department also provides comprehensive care for breast diseases, ranging from benign breast lumps to breast cancer surgery. OPD services are available daily at present.

Patients with these conditions have often had to travel outside the state for specialised surgical treatment. With this department, such care is now available at KIMS, supported by close collaboration with Endocrinology, Nuclear Medicine, Radiology & Pathology.

The department also aims to develop as an academic and training centre for endocrine and breast surgery in the region with this addition, KIMS continues its journey of delivering advanced affordable and accessible healthcare through state-of-the-art infrastructure, highly qualified specialists and a strong focus on innovation, education and patients safety.
