International Experts Emphasize Industry-Academia
Synergy at KIIT’s ‘Industry Academia Connect–2.0’; Prof. Seth Cohen Steals the Spotlight
The KIIT-DU hosted its much-anticipated Industry Academia Connect–2.0 on February 20, 2026 bringing together leading scientists and academicians to deliberate on research aligned with real-world industrial applications.
Organized by COIR-CNGMT, the programme underscored KIIT’s focus on bridging laboratory research with industry-driven innovation. The event drew an engaged audience of faculty members, researchers and students eager to interact with internationally acclaimed experts.

The central attraction of the programme was Prof. Seth M. Cohen, Distinguished Professor and Chancellor’s Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at the University of California, San Diego, USA. A globally recognized name in materials and bioinorganic chemistry, Prof. Cohen’s presence generated palpable excitement among participants.
In his address, Prof. Cohen spoke about translational research and the need to design materials and chemical systems with clear societal and industrial relevance — from energy applications to drug development. Drawing from his own journey — spanning Stanford University, UC Berkeley and significant policy roles in the United States government, including at DARPA — he emphasized the importance of scientists stepping beyond academia to engage with policy, entrepreneurship and startups.
An elected fellow of the American Chemical Society, the Royal Society of Chemistry and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Prof. Cohen has also co-founded multiple startups, including Blacksmith Medicines. His talk blended scientific depth with an approachable narrative, inspiring young researchers to think beyond publications and towards impact.
Another distinguished speaker, Prof. C. R. Sinha, Dean, Jadavpur University, shared insights from his vast academic career. Prof. Sinha, a Fellow of multiple prestigious scientific bodies and recognized among the top 2% Indian scientists in Stanford University’s global list (2020–2025), highlighted the evolving role of chemistry in interdisciplinary innovation. With over 520 research publications and supervision of numerous doctoral scholars, he stressed the importance of sustained research quality and mentorship.
Also addressing the gathering was Dr. B.N. Acharya, Scientist-F and Head of Academic Outreach at DRDO’s DRDE, who spoke about defence research and opportunities for academic collaboration with national research laboratories. He encouraged faculty and scholars to actively pursue mission-oriented projects aligned with national priorities.
The interactive session that followed saw lively questions from students, particularly around research commercialization, international collaborations and career pathways in science policy and industry. Prof. Cohen, in particular, engaged warmly with participants, sharing candid reflections on his early career choices and the evolving nature of scientific careers.
