The Department of Public Health Dentistry of Kalinga Institute of Dental Sciences (KIDS), Bhubaneswar, a constituent of KIIT Deemed-to-be-University, conducted a free dental check-up camp under the guidance of Dr. Ipseeta  Menon (Professor & HoD), on April 29 at Odisha Association of Blind (OAB), Mother Teresa Road, Unit 3, Bhubaneswar.

Following the philosophy of “Art of Giving” under the leadership of Founder of KIIT-KISS Dr. Achyuta Samanta, the initiative was led by Deputy Director (Administration) Dr. Jugajyoti Pathi and KIDS Principal Dr. Aswini Kumar Kar.

The key to good health is good oral health. Poor oral health and untreated dental conditions influence the quality of life of individuals, especially the visually challenged individuals. Patients who are visually challenged are more prone to caries and periodontal diseases owing to their inadequate oral hygiene habits. Their food, eating habits, medicines, limitations in physical activity, and poor cleaning habits all lead to poor oral health.

Since the visually challenged individuals depend much on sound, speech and touch, to orient themselves to situations, an oral health educative talk was also delivered and tooth brushing techniques were taught using the dental care model by audio-tactile method for proper oral hygiene maintenance. Free consultations and free dental check-up was carried out among 104 members of OAB.
