FDP-21 on ‘New Dimensions in Surgery Medicine ‘at Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences
Kalinga Institute of Medical Sciences (KIMS) kick started this year’s academic session with the Annual Faculty Development Program from 21st – 25th June 2021. The school-level theme of the program was ‘New Dimensions in Surgery & Medicine’. It focused on Clinical Medicine, Medical Education in India, Healthcare in India, Data in Health Care Management, COVID Pandemic, Innovative Method of Vascular Reconstruction, and Faculty Development. Besides FDPs conducted from time to time round the year, an annual FDP is organized with contemporary themes to enable faculty members to experience relevant medical practice and knowledge.
The themes for 2021 would enable faculty members to experience New Dimensions in Surgery & Medicine through COVID pandemic. The five-day program featured seven sessions, each centered on a contemporary theme, taken by eminent resource persons.
Maj. Gen. Prof. P. K. Patnaik, Principal, KIMS & DG KIMS Group, welcomed all faculty members and resource persons and emphasized the importance of FDP in the present day academic environment. The first day session included ‘Clinical Medicine: Has it lost its oblivion?’ and ‘How modern gadgetry in Medicine has a free run in patient care; resulting in loss of human touch & clinical care which is sought after by most patients’. The topic was deliberate by Prof. (Dr.) Arup Kumar Kundu, Ex-Professor of Medicine & In-Charge, Rheumatology Clinic – RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata (Govt.). Being an eminent speaker, he emphasized the importance of clinical medicine in modern day.
Dr. Ved Prakash Mishra, Vice Chancellor – Krishna Institute of Medical Sciences, Karad, Maharashtra conducted a session on ‘Medical Education in India and its future direction’ on the second day of the FDP. He spoke about the relevance of the new Medical Education Policy to the Nation’s needs. During discussion, he laid focus on strengths & weaknesses of new medical education and role of competence based medical education for future medical graduates.
The resource person for the third day session on ‘Healthcare in India: Quo Vadis. Learning from CMC, Vellore’ was Dr. Sunil Thomas Chandy, Professor in Cardiology & former Director – CMC Vellore. He expressed his thoughts on how CMC has become a Centre of Excellence.
The fourth day session included ‘Power of understanding data in healthcare management’. Speaker of the session Dr. Ranjan Dash, MD – Shibaji Hospitals, Pvt. Ltd., Bhubaneswar discussed its usefulness in Hospital management and also in research. He generated lots of inquisitiveness among faculties. There was a long question answer session.
Dr. J. P. Muliyil, Ex-Principal, CMC Vellore conducted a session on ‘An insight into COVID pandemic’ on the fifth day of FDP. He spoke lucidly about evidence based COVID control measures and effects of lockdown & vaccination in COVID control. There was a long question & answer session following the talk. Questions ranged from covering the dead body – in a plastic bag and transmissibility of virus from dead body to living person, role of measuring antibody after COVID vaccination to sanitizing wearable food items for prevention of COVID. Many myths were cleared by him in an erudite manner
