Covid-19: KINS Organizes e-Seminar on Biomedical Waste Management

Kalinga Institute of Nursing Sciences (KINS) organized an e-Seminar on “Biomedical Waste Management in Context of COVID-19” on 3rd October 2020 via Google meet. It was attended by about 200 participants, including faculty members and students of B.Sc (2nd, 3rd year) & GNM (2nd Year) of KINS. A Pre-Test was conducted among the participants before the seminar.

Prof (Mrs) Amarita Lenka, Principal, KINS, in her welcome address, highlighted the importance of Biomedical Waste Management.

The first Session was taken by Mr. Pankaj Kumar Bindhani, Clinical Instructor, PBMH, KIMS on the topic waste management protocol in KIMS. He explained about the types of hospital waste and how to segregate it. Mrs. Angel Merry Paul Dani, Tutor KINS reflected briefly about the steps of segregation, storage and disposal of waste for COVID patients in hospital settings.

Third Session on disposal of dead bodies in COVID-19 was taken by Ms. Pragyanshree Nanda, Tutor KINS. She emphasized on standard protocol to be followed by health care workers, sanitization, disinfection and handling of dead bodies in mortuary/burial ground.

The last Session was taken by Ms. Pranati Patra, (Tutor KINS) on biomedical waste management in home quarantine. She discussed the type of waste generated and collected from the quarantined households, rules and responsibilities of authorities, safety precautions and standard operating procedures to be followed by healthcare workers.

Earlier, Mrs. Niharibala Nayak, Tutor, KINS introduced the speakers. After the sessions, the Post Test was conducted for the participants. The results of both Pre Test and Post Test were 42% and 62% respectively. The e-Seminar concluded with the vote of thanks by Ms. Swetarani Dalei, Tutor KINS.
